The Catholic Church is speaking out on the Vieux Fort DSH project. Archbishop Robert Rivas, in consultation with the clergy of the Archdiocese of Castries, have serious concerns about the potential impact of the project on the poor and vulnerable. Their specific concerns include: Possible displacement of people who occupy and operate within and around the investment site, damage and depletion to cultural and natural resources and, unsustainable relocation of the local landfill in Vieux Fort. The Church has also raised concern about the NICE program; calling for re-instatement. Healthcare and crime were also highlighted as issues of concern in the Archbishop’s statement. The office of the Prime Minister declined to comment on the matter saying it prefers to initiate cordial dialogue with the church as this time.
