The Workers Union (NWU) has written to Labor Minister, Stephenson King, requesting that he give urgent attention to addressing what the NWU calls “labor atrocities.” The union says employees are losing confidence in the Department of Labor to address their issues. Prior to Minister King assuming office, the NWU had undertaken an exercise that revealed a number of issues that need addressing. The NWU says according to the information it has obtained, many unscrupulous employers were still not paying overtime to employees who have completed the regular hours of work and are told to hold on and work overtime. The union says too often occupational safety and health requirements are not being adhered to. The union is also calling the Minister’s attention to the fact that some of the arrangements provided in work contracts are dehumanizing and create no job stability.
