A shooting incident last night triggered a full lockdown of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI).
The university sent out a campus-wide text message warning students not to leave their halls of residence and urging off-campus students to get home “as quick and as safe as you can”.
“Shooter wearing red shirt and was last seen headed down to the bowl side,” the message continued. It was later revealed that a taxi operator was the victim of the shooting.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) confirmed that he was shot on the UWI campus shortly after 9 o’clock.
CCU said the taxi operator was in critical but stable condition at hospital and that investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting.
