The Department of Human Services says the volume of child abuse cases it is dealing with is overwhelming.
For the first half of the year, 252 cases ranging from sexual, verbal and physical abuse were reported. 151 cases involved girls and 101 were boys.
The Department says for this reason the National Foster Care Program is critical. However it is finding difficulty in getting St.Lucians to come forward and volunteer as Foster Parents.
Family Case Worker, Lea Goring says the Department is often stressed in finding a safe environment for the children who cannot be returned to their homes. She says it is important for St.Lucians to see the value in becoming foster parents because ultimately the Society benefits.
The Department of Human Services is encouraging citizens to access information on the Foster Care Program from its offices
