The Chinese President is extending a hand of friendship to the media in Latin American and the Caribbean, saying it would influence government decisions, create new friendships, and lay the foundation for new partnerships. Speaking at the official opening of the inaugural China-Latin America and the Caribbean Media Summit in Santiago, Chile, on Tuesday, he said media personnel from Latin America and the Caribbean are welcome to work and study in China, pointing out that it would help to create a better understanding between the people of the two regions while creating the scope for better bilateral relations. In fact, in welcoming the Chinese leader, who had just concluded a visit to neighbouring Peru, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet remarked that while “some persons were seeking to build walls (an apparent reference to United States President-elect Donald Trump), the Chinese were seeking to build bridges of friendship with Latin America and the Caribbean”
