The announcement of Bob Dylan as this year’s Nobel Prize winner in Literature has sparked heated debate about whether songwriting can be considered as Literature.Author and poet Vladimir Lucien says he does not share in the indignation that many people are expressing about Bob Dylan winning the prize. While the Nobel Prize is widely considered the most prestigious literature award in the world, Lucien says the Swedish Academy has made a habit of awarding western, white, male writers.
Lucien says people cannot assume that the institutions that hand out such awards, in this case, the Swedish Academy, is operating from a neutral standpoint.
