Minister for Agriculture, Ezechiel Joseph, has said that more recognition needs to be given to the livestock subsector. The minister stated that the subsector has much potential, and can bring about great returns to those who invest in it. He says one does not need acres upon acres to have a profitable operation. He wants more people to seriously consider going into the sub sector. The minister added that consumers who purchase locally-reared livestock could also reap significant health benefits. He drew attention to St Lucia’s large food import bill and says local livestock is much healthier than what the country is importing. While the cost may be minimally higher, the minister added, consumers can either spend more to eat healthy, or spend more on medical fees due to unhealthy diets.
