The announcement by the Office of the Mayor about the closure of part of the highway to accommodate the Saturday Flea market in Castries has drawn the annoyance of some taxi drivers and members of the public. The decision was taken to close off the lower end of the John Compton Highway opposite the Vendor’s Arcade every Saturday until further notice to facilitate what the Mayor’s Office described as “the popular Jeremie Street Flea Market”. Reacting to the news, some members of the public have called the decision ill advised. Taxi operators say they were not given advanced notice of the decision, nor advised of what provision has been made to accommodate them. They claim that on Saturday they had a tough time finding a parking area to conduct their business. The say the Mayor’s office needs to show more consideration to how the decision affects their ability to earn a living.
