Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has sought to explain his vision for air services in St.Lucia.
After supporting a bold move by the Prime Minister of St.Vincent to withhold funding to regional carrier, Liat, until a vast improvement in service is realized, the St.Lucia Leader says the time has come for St.Lucia to embrace more competition in the skies.
At a news conference last evening Prime Minister Chastanet announced that he is exploring making Caribbean Airlines the national carrier for St.Lucia.
He told the Conference that the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority is a major impediment to competition in the region, simply because it has not allowed the entry of other airlines, adding that he is convinced the Aviation Authority can not be fixed. And for that reason he would St.Lucia to move away from the jurisdiction of the Authority.
The Prime Minister’s plan is to move St. Lucia’s aviation to Trinidad and Tobago. This he said will encourage other people to be able to open up an airline in Saint Lucia or in some of the other Islands.
Chastanet has firmly stated that Saint Lucia would not be providing any financial support to LIAT, which has struggled over many years to stay in the air.
