The Caribbean Community (Caricom) has described late Nobel Laureate Sir Derek Walcott as a “quintessential Caribbean writer”, as the region continues to pay tri­bute to the St Lucian icon who died on Friday at the age of 87. Caricom Secretary General Irwin LaRocque said Walcott, a prolific and accomplished writer who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, “has left a void in the tapestry of Carib­bean literature and theatre, after more than seven decades of producing inspiring ­literary works in essays, poetry and plays”. According to the Caribbean Community, Walcott was a true cultural icon, a gift from St Lucia to the region and the world. He embraced the entire Caribbean as his own
