Trinidad and Tobago is in a state of crisis and law-abiding citizens should have the right to guns to protect themselves, according to Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Trinidad recorded 54 murders in January.

Speaking at a news conference at her Port of Spain office yesterday, Persad-Bissessar called on the Government to convene an extraordinary meeting of Parliament to discuss crime.

Among her recommendations to fight crime, Persad-Bissessar also requested that the Government return the “Hanging Bill” to Parliament, reconvene bi-partisan talks with the Opposition on crime and set up a new regime for the granting of firearms licences.

She also called on Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley to speak out on terrorism and protect the interest of this country.
