The Caribbean region has been warned to brace for more deportations of criminals to the region. It is an issue which has been of concern and very topical even before the election of Donald Trump – who has vowed to target some 3 million criminals and gang members for deportation. One month after his June election victory, St Lucia’s Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, in an interview with the Barbados Nation News, decried the “dumping of criminal deportees on the Caribbean, many of whom had little relationship with their new homelands.” While at the same time cutting back on its funding to improve security in the region. Many anticipate that the situation will only worsen during theTrump presidency. External Affairs Minister, Sarah Flood Beaubrun has commented on the way forward for St Lucia, the region and US on this issue.
