Now, Ahead of Jounen Kweyol celebrations, the Department of Fisheries is cautioning all vendors and patrons that crayfish season is closed. The department says the crayfish resource continues to be threatened by the illegal use of poisonous substances used for harvesting. As such, an extended closed season on the harvest and sale of freshwater shrimp and crayfish remains in effect. It is therefore illegal to remove from the rivers of Saint Lucia, expose for sale, sell, purchase, or at any time have in one’s possession wild fresh water crayfish. Persons are encouraged to purchase farmed crayfish from Aquaculture farmers and the St. Lucia Fish Marketing Cooperation. These have large blue gandi which are not present in the wild-caught crayfish.
