A sixteen year old inmate at the Bordelais Correctional facility gave birth to a baby on Saturday at Victoria Hospital. The teenager was pregnant when she was incarcerated. She has been removed from the general female prison population and placed in a special unit that allows her to take care of her newborn baby. The 16 yr old – who was prosecuted for stabbing a friend with whom she lived – will soon be released having completed her twelve month sentence. Authorities are discussing the need for a formal protocol for pregnant prison inmates to ensure protection of the mother and the child if born while the mother is still serving time. The Division of Human Services is working with the prison to take care of the young mother and her child.
