Seven people were shot, five fatally, in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Four of those who were killed are children – ages 2, 9, 13 and 17. The incident took place about 2 am Sunday. The gunmen, who were said to be wearing police vests, kicked in the doors of two houses and opened fire, hitting seven occupants. Jamaica’s opposition leader, Portia Simpson Miller, says she is not only devastated by the news, but outraged by the incident. The Opposition leader says this is another example that children are no longer safe in their homes, as crime continues to spiral out of control in Jamaica. She called on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to tell the nation about the long and short term plans to tackle crime, as well as the resources that will be allocated to execute these plans. Simpson Miller pledged the support of the Opposition for any meaningful effort aimed at reducing murders.
