Five men got a taste of freedom after years behind bars at the Bordelais Correctional Facility. The men have been pardoned by the Governor General on the advice of the Committee on Prerogative of mercy, also known as the Mercy Committee. Under St. Lucia’s constitution, the Governor General, has the power to grant a pardon to any person convicted of any offence. Among the 5 men now set free, there are those who have been pardoned for murder, manslaughter, grievous harm and drug possession. The five men are considered fully rehabilitated after years at Bordelais Correctional Facility. They will re-enter society as free men. One of them is Stephen Mongroo. Mongroo’s high profile case even inspired a local documentary by Untold Stories. In the documentary he claimed that he had intervened in a fight involving his brother. The altercation ended with Mongroo claiming a life. In 1994, Mongroo, was sentenced to death for the offense of murder. He later received a stay of execution. For years he has appealed for pardon, on the grounds that he has been rehabilitated and is a changed man. Authorities stress that the five pardoned men pose no danger to society.
