A 58-year-old Mackelton Dacosta Wood, of no fixed place of abode, has been convicted of stealing ham, and will spend the next six months in jail.Wood, who had 84 convictions to his name, 82 of which were for dishonesty, including ham theft, was convicted for the 85th time after he was caught attempting to steal three hams worth $238.38. The court heard that Wood entered the supermarket just after opening today, placed the hams in a shopping basket, and later transferred them to a haversack before making his way towards the exit. When a security guard pursued him Wood dropped the bag during his escape bid but was captured. In examining his conviction card the magistrate noticed that Wood had been before virtually every magistrate on the island.
